spinning out of a comment thread at tor.com, there's a post on [livejournal.com profile] deadbrowalking inviting a roll call:
Let's make it really clear, people. If you identify as a POC/nonwhite person and you read or watch scifi or fantasy, give yourself a name check in this thread. I am particularly wanting shoutouts from people who do not live in the US and who have still managed to read genre fiction.

so wave your flag, or go enjoy the vicarious squee of people sharing their love of genre. (13+ pages as i write.)

today's most joyful discovery includes how to make LoudTwitter postings look more attractive, and how to never see LoudTwitter contents on your friends page if you don't want to read them. (with a bonus link to how to remove replies from LoudTwitter postings, so that people reading outside of real time only see what *you* wrote without the contextless replies.)

go, lovers and haters, and enjoy.

i don't have friends in the right places, but maybe you do. please pass this info on to friends and family you may have in the state of Washington in the targeted districts. (map of Washington state legislative districts) what matters is a constituent making a contact that is not a form contact.

expanding Washington's domestic partnership law may not be a cakewalk this time.

via slog

The Faith and Freedom Network, a group "committed to preserving traditional Judeo-Christian values," is using its blog to wage a war on the domestic partnership bill. The Family Policy Institute of Washington is also crusading against the measure.
..snip...
The Faith and Freedom Network blog goes on to list the following phone numbers:

'They need to hear from you.

Dale Brandland, district 42 — 360-786-7682
Curtis King, district 14 — 360-786-7626
Cheryl Pfluge, district 5 — 360-786-1999

Secondly, these Democrats will be up for election next year. Ones with an asterisk (*) by their names have one or more Republican seat mates.

Claudia Kaufman, district 47 — 360-786-7692
Steve Hobbs, district 44 — 360-786-7686
*Chris Marr, district 6 — 360-7867610
Eric Oemig, district 45 — 360-786-7672
Rodney Tom, district 48 — 360-786-7694
*Derek Kilmer, district 26 — 360-786-7650
*Tracey Eide, district 30 — 360-786-7658

The following two senators are not up for reelection next year, but have Republican seat mates.

Jim Kastama, district 25 — 360-786-7648
Mary Margaret Haugen, district 10 — 360-786-7618'

You heard what they said: "They need to hear from you."

once a year i offer this (same) public service announcement: where to get free testing for sexually transmitted diseases in King County.

there are plenty of opportunities for free treatment here as well. University of Washington is a leader in herpes and HIV/AIDS research, and were developers of the Western Blot test.

in any case, your health (and birth control if you swing that way) is something that should be discussed before, not after. here's some help on how to handle it.

(the following links are reasonably safe for work, but the rest of the site is not.) it doesn't hurt to read the manual, but the safest and most reliable sex is solo.

via multiple folks, (this version of the text from [livejournal.com profile] varina8):
In an upcoming interview with Katie Couric to be aired this week, Sarah Palin is unable to name any Supreme Court case other than Roe v. Wade. (Addendum by Miss M: It was any case that she disagreed with, but still. She couldn't think of Dred Scott? And she - or her staff - issued a press release disagreeing with a recent decision.)

The Rules: Post info about ONE Supreme Court decision, modern or historic, to your lj. (Any decision, as long as it's not Roe v. Wade.)

Note to Non-U.S. Peeps: It should be noted that, in fairness to the American electorate, most Americans can name more than one U.S. Supreme Court case off the top of their heads. So, the fact that Palin can only name one is simply appalling.

a relatively recent favorite: Lawrence v. Texas. Petitioners’ right to liberty under the Due Process Clause gives them the full right to engage in private conduct without government intervention. consensual sex between adults in the privacy of their own home is none of the government's business.

get real-time Metro bus info from a voice that sounds like Stephen Hawking. all you need is a regular cel phone and a Metro bus stop with a schedule posted.

phone stuff here.

web stuff here. (a replacement for the sadly dead Bus Monster)

used it tonight, worked beautifully.

four laptops stolen from Clarion West student housing

in a nutshell, four people who have turned their lives upside down to write intensively for six weeks have no computers to write on. at least one of them also had no backup of their work. this is devastating.

if you are in Western Washington and have a laptop you can give or loan for the rest of the program, please contact them (info on the page linked above) ASAP. they are also accepting earmarked monetary donations.
