You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting -
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

Wild Geese by Mary Oliver

Forgiveness is the act of ceasing to expect repayment of something that is owed.

this is something to think upon.

"The Chinese concept of qi presents a problem in English because it is neither matter nor energy but rather both. Several distinctions that are rooted in Western philosophy and Western languages, such as the distinction between matter and energy or between body and mind, are far less concrete in traditional Chinese thought and language. In a sense it is the same problem that faces modern scientists who must describe light as both particles and waves."

That's when I miss you most. When you're here. When you aren't here, when you're just a ghost from the past or a dream from another life, it's easier then.

J - and once we charge up the dilythium crystals, we can leave the cloaking device in place until we've beamed aboard W and Dick, who we will drop into a volcano. on film.

M - like the one ring, only better.
(if Sauron poured all his hate and malice and stuff into the Ring, why wasn't he all like "I am the dark lord and I say it is bunny-petting day!"?)

J - (i like to think that hate and malice is just like love. you never run out.)

M - (i've certainly never run out of hate and malice, but i have never tried to forge a ring of ultimate dark power.)

J - (nope, i think you can always make more. i think i've rooted it out, but then it wells up and fills in all the spaces around the love and the happy. then again, not a dark lord. but i think a dark lord would have more potent malice than me.)

M - (well, yes. i suppose if i were a dark lord, my malice would have to be more potent. it's just the word "all". if i put all my socks in the drawer, i have none on my feet.)

J - (but i would steal a pair of C's.)

M - (i do not like Jesse's socks. my socks are better.)

J - yes, but i would still have socked feet.

M - well, true. (i also secretly prefer unsocked feet, even if that means they are colder)

J - (me too. and that's why we're not dark lords.)

M - (i thought it was, like hobbits, we were readily distracted by scones)

J - (mmmmmmmmscones. now i want one.)

M - (see? if the One Ring had been quietly whispering "The scones of Mordor are warm and fluffy," in Bilbo's ear, the whole story would have gone differently)

Avoid irony.
Even native speakers of English have difficulty discerning irony in writing.

Leon. Well then, go you into hell?
Beat. No; but to the gate; and there will the devil meet me, like an old cuckold, with horns on his head, and say, ‘Get you to heaven, Beatrice, get you to heaven; here’s no place for you maids:’ so deliver I up my apes, and away to Saint Peter for the heavens; he shows me where the bachelors sit, and there live we as merry as the day is long.

on my calendar at work:
"9/23 2:30pm Sexual Harassment and Discipline"

overheard:
"are you God, Jay? if you are i should stop shooting you with rubber bands."

on a check request form:
"Additional Comments: I like cheez-its."

from the Norwescon 27 post-con report (on gaming):
"one of the biggest complaints i got was the lack of space to play and the other two were the noise and the smell. ...the smell was so bad on Friday night Pat, former chair, went out and bought air fresheners which helped out a lot. the smell was not so bad on Saturday except for the pine fresh scent."

"I thought about how much I wanted to lose myself in those evasive eyes. I thought about the loneliness that would take hold of me that night when I said good-bye to her, once I had run out of tricks or stories to make her stay with me any longer. I thought about how little I had to offer her and how much I wanted from her."
