^ i thought about this a lot at the gym today.

still going to the trainer regularly. i mostly enjoy it, except for the occasional days that end with the goddamn assault bike.* 50 seconds moderate, 10 seconds all out, five times. five minutes is not very much on paper but it's after i've been doing weight exercises for an hour (and i still haven't dialed in my allergy routine for living by the highway and a park where there's something flowering every week so i end up mouth breathing a lot). then i stumble home and it takes about 15 minutes before i'm walking steady again.

*Trainer T knows that i hate it. he usually sticks me with it during my first week back after taking a tattoo healing break (i take a week off because staph, and then no boxing gloves for the first week back because friction and probably also staph). i don't know if this is giving me a hard time for being away, or a thing he likes to try after i've had a long rest, or just a coincidence because i always end with cardio, there are only so many options, and in our first interview i told him i don't like the treadmill.

because new tattoo, i took a week off from the gym (not going to risk a staph infection). i was back this week, but not doing boxing for cardio because i didn't want the friction of the gloves on my wrists (and staph).

Tuesday's cardio alternative was HIIT on the airbike. other than going for the more interesting wattage targets instead of speed, hate hate hate. that thing's a torture machine.

today it was battling ropes, using the same intervals as the airbike on Tuesday. the ropes were definitely hard work but felt like play. A++

I was surprised to do an entirely different routine today. I guess I shouldn't be, that's part of what I'm paying for.

Conversational tidbit: the idol in Raiders of the Lost Ark would weigh about 65 lbs if it were solid gold. I think it's not unreasonable for Indy to palm it, he's in amazing shape...but the running and the throwing and Alfred Molina's character catching it? Not so much

In the waning of the year I let (the beneficial version of) my impulsiveness off the chain. I have a year-end roundup post in progress, but that is on my computer which is in the other room and getting up is difficult

  • I had to pause writing it last night to meet with a tattoo artist and then collect a few more references for her. I've been thinking about this piece since shortly after my first one (nine years ago!) and probably would have done it sooner if that wonderful artist hadn't left town. found her because I was getting maintenance on my ear piercings... I really liked the piercer and I think a "curated ear" is in my future but after I've absorbed the cost of the tattoo

  • today (yes today the holiday) I did a functional movement screening with a physical trainer. I start small group on Thursday. I am so out of shape. I'm not in pain tonight but very fatigued from doing a very limited number of squats, lunges, etc. there were zero judgement statements made and he has promised me that I can hit the punching bag (fun for ironymaidens) for cardio instead of the stupid treadmill. goal is build bone density and get back to a solid self-rescue for paddling. fingers crossed

  • I also have a pottery class starting at the end of the month; it's making tableware. I haven't found my imaginary dream dishes for sale, so I'm making my own coupes/pasta bowls with blackjack and hookers
