i'm not kidding. i'm also pretty sure part of it is in the novelization.

Holy womp rat! That's the fullest cut of that lost material I've seen so far. I recall seeing a version that included some (preliminary?) flash efx in the sky when Luke is looking at the battle through his binocs. But that version ended after Toshe Station, before the scene with Biggs telling Luke his plans to join the rebellion. Shame this material got cut, or at least wasn't reshot and made canon onscreen. Not only does it give the SW universe a significant percentage boost in its female population (nice-looking too, with a British accent, rrrrowl), but finally we're told why the Empire is, well, you know...bad. (As it stands in the final cut, the Empire may be just the model of development and efficiency that the slovenly Outer Planets need. Okay, maybe the Death Star is a little overkill, but we're in a War on Terror here!) Plus, of course, it gives us all the needed hooks for Biggs' reappearance in the latest Authorized Final Stop Askin' Officially Approved (Until the Next One) edition of the film.

As a sci-fi kid back in '77, I acquired (don't recall how) a first edition of the novelization that had come out before the movie opened, and these scenes were in it, plus a still or two with Biggs. Nice to see what that all looked like. (Notice that in the final film Luke in his garage plays "swoop zoom" with the model of the Skyhopper that Biggs refers to.)

Oh, Christ. How come I can't remember the terms of my mortgage, but this stuff stays in the medulla oblongeeka for so long, untouched by any recent neuron firings?

it's long term memory. once it's coded, it stays.

It's odd that my pre-college memory is so much sharper than my post-college memory. Okay, maybe not so odd....

yeah, until they blow up alderaan, it's not clear exactly why anyone's revolting against them.

Yeah, but you never really saw Alderaan. I tell ya, it was a pit. Trash everywhere, burning tire yards, a funny smell that's a little like bad cheese.... Why, the property values in that arm of the galaxy went up 20% when the Death Star was through. And the space lanes, they're so tidy now.

"All right, but apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and public health, what has the Empire ever done for us?"

::Trying to imagine you at 14 in your droids footy-pajamas and Han Solo drink glass::

You know, I never saw the holiday special. Although by all accounts it's worth a viewing now for its serious retro-kitsch-OMG! factor. Wonder how it plays with a Pink Floyd soundtrack....

i know you meant 4

Whoops. Yes, of course. I looked up your birth date and everything. Clearly I have a mental block imagining you at 4. However, a song does come to mind -- "Oh, you must have been a beautiful baaaybeee...."

Hey, it was my first film too! I was six.

We lived in the boonies, and a movie in town was a rare treat and a logistical feat.

I've often thought about whether SW turned me into the big geek I am now. I remember being entranced by Space:1999 long before I saw Wars, though, so maybe it was genetic.

Very cool! We had big, nice picture books of each film in the original trilogy when I was a kid -- the ones with set stills and text describing each scene. It included the scenes with Biggs, and had stills of that footage.

The back cover of "Jedi" had a photo of red-uniformed Imperial Guards standing watch at the entrance to the Emperor's chambers. That image used to freak me out.
