Holy womp rat! That's the fullest cut of that lost material I've seen so far. I recall seeing a version that included some (preliminary?) flash efx in the sky when Luke is looking at the battle through his binocs. But that version ended after Toshe Station, before the scene with Biggs telling Luke his plans to join the rebellion. Shame this material got cut, or at least wasn't reshot and made canon onscreen. Not only does it give the SW universe a significant percentage boost in its female population (nice-looking too, with a British accent, rrrrowl), but finally we're told why the Empire is, well, you know...bad. (As it stands in the final cut, the Empire may be just the model of development and efficiency that the slovenly Outer Planets need. Okay, maybe the Death Star is a little overkill, but we're in a War on Terror here!) Plus, of course, it gives us all the needed hooks for Biggs' reappearance in the latest Authorized Final Stop Askin' Officially Approved (Until the Next One) edition of the film.

As a sci-fi kid back in '77, I acquired (don't recall how) a first edition of the novelization that had come out before the movie opened, and these scenes were in it, plus a still or two with Biggs. Nice to see what that all looked like. (Notice that in the final film Luke in his garage plays "swoop zoom" with the model of the Skyhopper that Biggs refers to.)

Oh, Christ. How come I can't remember the terms of my mortgage, but this stuff stays in the medulla oblongeeka for so long, untouched by any recent neuron firings?
