I'm not America's Best Christian, but she sure is. Enjoy kids, it's time for lunch and Bookfest.

i was out every night this week except Tuesday, when i was all exhausted and bailed on SLGC. saw a bunch of movies, went to Giggles, the market, and Bookfest. most of my entertainment cost nothing but my time, or paid for itself.
i had the best morning in a long time with C - i often wake up on saturday with a headache, don't know why, but there was no headache today - so we were bouncy and playful. we ducked in and out of the yellow "public art" and the bamboo trees and i got to sit in the front of the blue train again. and Russell Stover, makers of the eponymous Mint Dream, have a new line of low carb candy, so i finally got to have the chocolate mint hit i've been waiting for. plus, this is the 50th anniversary of PeepsTM, so we toured their display van and talked about PA and got cool shiny stickers. C agreed that i can put one on the car :)

The Human Stain

Nicholas Meyer is one of the great secret talents in America. he took a book i'm sure i would never slog through, reorganized it, and condensed it into a film that the director assures us maintains the voice of the author. pretty cool, and while he's worked on hugely popular and artisitically successful projects, he isn't a household name.

it was my first Warren Report event and first trip to the Harvard Exit. both were quite lovely and i wasn't as distracted by technical issues as my companion (nor back pain).

anything i say will be a spoiler. the "big surprise" was the thing i got right away from the publicity blurbs. what is great is that Tony Hopkins does a sweet love scene and is a charming dancer, as is Gary Sinese. Nicole Kidman is the great skinny actress. Anna Devere Smith (along with most of the rest of the cast) supports my assertion that there is no better training for an actor than the stage. the ensemble work was smooth and even, and it was funny. funny.

we skipped out on part of the post-show thing with the director, and joyfully low-carb thai food followed.

Love, Actually

is sweet, and in the words of [livejournal.com profile] frabjousdave, cherry cheesecake. i love cherry cheesecake, and while this was not the instant jello kind, it wasn't quite my sister's either (and my sister is the mistress of chesecake).

there was only one surprise in the film, but all the nonsurprises felt good going down. it's really designed as the perfect break from Christmas shopping, and it should find an audience in the people who aren't watching ROtK or the Matrix. it is delightful to hear Liam Neeson's own dialect. dreamy, actually. Hugh Grant was the same guy he always is. i was surprised that Billy Bob Thornton's slick asshole president of the US made it into the tailored for America cut (merry christmas, my ass). i wasn't really moved by it, but it was warm, fuzzy, and charming, and i shall recommend it to my parents, who will adore it, i'm sure. (other favorites of theirs include Notting Hill and the
Sabrina remake with Harrison Ford)

i ended the evening with five men and a Maker's Mark on the rocks.

my brother Douglas has been asking me for a year if i've gone to Giggles yet, and now i can get him to shut the fuck up.

I feel like Friday was pretty much covered by [livejournal.com profile] frabjousdave, [livejournal.com profile] scifigal and [livejournal.com profile] spazzychic. not sure i need to rehash from my point of view, 'cause i'm flattered by theirs. i was pleased to see [livejournal.com profile] spazzychic in the flesh again, meet [livejournal.com profile] scifigal, and sing the Smiths on the street - may we continue to attract attention together in the future.
i had not seen The Ring, so Ringu was creepy, held some surprises, and delighted me with its Japanese quirkiness. i also enjoyed watching the film melt, and the staff in the audience running up to the projection booth. i've always been a little afraid of the distorted reflections in the tv screen, and i left the patio door open all night 'cause C was asleep and i would have had to walk right by the television.

and yes, i am a screamer.
