i've been wanting to write more here, but March was a very bad month. April is much better.

i generally stay away from the entertainment media cycle, but i do like to indulge in the NPR podcast Pop Culture Happy Hour. it's a bunch of smart people talking about movies and books and whatnot. i don't always agree with them, but they are entertaining and occasionally turn me onto something new.

my favorite bit is that they always wrap up with "Things that are making me happy this week".

...which is how i ended up watching Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. the linked review captures most of it, but might be misleading in that we are never laughing *at* Kimmy - we are laughing *with* her as she delights in subway rides and discovering how an automatic faucet sensor works. there's also a thread of profound rage underneath her efforts to win by living well. i don't think that the later episodes work as well as the early ones, but i do think that they're set up well for the second season.

it was exactly the thing i needed at the moment i needed it.* the earworm theme song has become a bit of a mantra for me.

i relocated to a new desk at work. so far, it's good. i get more sun, i'm beside a whiteboard, people can get to me easily, but i'm not on the highway to a popular meeting room. i'm surrounded by developers, who are mostly quiet and focused - unless you want to know Cheryl's birthday. logic problem is to programmer as cardboard box is to cat.

***
Norwescon was restorative and good. we decided to take it easy and enjoy being away from home. i went to a lot of science panels, and we spent Saturday night lolling in the hotel room eating room service and watching soccer on tv. i bid on and won a piece from the artist guest of honor. i knit 2/3 of a sock.

***
i've seen three episodes of Daredevil so far. i'm pleased. it's kind of odd to be going to the television format for more realistic violence, but okay. (i love that i watched a blood-spattered superhero show with a bunch of women while knitting and eating vegetarian stew over polenta.)

***
i finally got to make up a cancelled happy hour date with [livejournal.com profile] scarlettina. C and i spent nerd night out with [livejournal.com profile] samildanach and [livejournal.com profile] joyful_storm. i helped knitta P find a graceful way to end her shawl with the yarn she had left. my Exalted character assassinated someone. we're officially debt-free (again). C landed a long-term game writing contract and got to tell his technical editing gig to fuck off. i made [livejournal.com profile] mimerki watch all of Raising Arizona. i got [livejournal.com profile] buhrger hugs and played games. there are a bunch of other plans in the works.

April. i don't want to jinx anything, but it's looking better.

*and i watched the first episode on my phone while stuck on the bus home during the fish truck trafficpocalypse because i live in the future.

i've done something with friends most nights this week. at work i've been running, with looming deadlines and [livejournal.com profile] weezlgrrrl on vacation. (the other nights? packing up C for GenCon and Tomb Raider: Anniversary.)

okay, i wasn't running on Wednesday afternoon, when we went to a Mariners game. in a suite. with sushi. it was my first trip to Safeco field (i'm kinda meh about baseball and C hates it, so it hasn't been a priority) and somehow i don't think all the seats in the stadium are upholstered in leather. i got to use a spare ticket and hang out with [livejournal.com profile] steve98052, watch baby M chew on an expensive smartphone, and listen to my grandboss sweetly tell the story of the rally fries. very nice.

then i spent the evening chez [livejournal.com profile] scarlettina.

Thursday, teeth. (filling took 90 minutes instead of an hour. Dr. S says: "difficult. decay went below the gum." side of my face was numb through the afternoon. bleah.) then work. then the hothouse with [livejournal.com profile] mimerki (much needed) and Annapurna. which has no signage facing across the street. so there was some extra walking.

today, freaking marathon. work was killer, but it was followed by a flawless bus trip to the U District for dinner with [livejournal.com profile] shadow_and_veil, [livejournal.com profile] divinityof_fire, and [livejournal.com profile] buhrger (!!!). food meh, conversation yay, pilgrimage to Mix yay (vanilla ice cream, coconut, nutmeg). continuing conversation yay, and i got to touch [livejournal.com profile] buhrger's calluses. i'm still up and writing because bottomless chai + ice cream = one alert and perky girl.

maybe i should go play some Tomb Raider.

i went home early yesterday and took a nap. it never ceases to amaze me the way an hour of sleep can knit up my ravelled self.
i finally finished watching In the Mood for Love in time for [livejournal.com profile] butterflydrming to arrive and share a cup of tea. (an observation on the film later, perhaps. it's lovely, and i need to watch it again. let the phone ring three times, then hang up.) [livejournal.com profile] buhrger wasn't too far behind, and there was enough time for more tea before C was home and ready to eat.
La Carta de Oaxaca was absolutely packed (not unusual, but more than i expected on a Thursday), so [livejournal.com profile] butterflydrming and i waited for takeout and sent the introverts back to the house to be quiet together. i got to introduce [livejournal.com profile] butterflydrming to Dandelion Botanicals while we waited. (where she immediately started a conversation with one of the proprietors and left with an email address and a promise that they would try to make some tea soaps.)
even though i love sitting in the restaurant, having takeout was fun; we lounged about the living room and unwrapped banana leaves and talked about things that matter. (Chicken Soup for the Geek Soul: Worst. Chicken Soup. Ever.) there was more tea, and some chocolate, and hugs all around. and very few dishes to wash. (i enjoy hearing [livejournal.com profile] buhrger ask for herbal tea with a pronounced "h." perhaps not as much as [livejournal.com profile] spazzychic likes to hear him say about:p)
after the guests headed out, i was possessed by a need to rearrange the furniture in the bedroom. i must have done something right since i had the best sleep of the week, and bounced out of bed this morning in time to put on stripy socks and catch the express bus.

oh, and [livejournal.com profile] thegreymouser is my hero.
