This is a twist on the Letter Meme. Instead of coming up with ten items for a certain letter, you come up with five song titles for a certain letter and explain why you picked them. If interested then leave a comment. I'll give you a letter. You post this blurb in your journal along with your list.
scarlettina gave me L.
Lemon Tree: part of going anywhere in the car with my Dad is singing. when i was little our favorite 8-tracks to warble along with were The Best of Peter, Paul, and Mary and Kenny Rogers' Greatest Hits. i liked Lemon Tree even better than Puff the Magic Dragon.
The Long Black Veil: i love songs that tell stories. this is the song that i would most like to use in a noh fusion piece. the ghost narrating the story of their death is a common one, and if i couldn't get live performers i would probably have to use the Chieftains' version to get the flute and drums. (second in line is Stretched on Your Grave by Sinead O'Connor; people die a lot in noh. it also has a chant-y structure...)
Life Uncommon: i've never actually heard the Jewel version. i first heard a small ensemble from SLGC sing an amazing choral arrangement. later feeling its effect on the crowd at a marriage equality rally was stunning. i've since been lucky enough to perform it myself. i love it.
The Little Things You Do Together: this is the signature song from Company. i was always a good actor; i started taking voice lessons specifically so that i could make it into a college musical cast. i did it. (in the process i discovered that i like to keep my acting and singing separate.) it's also a pretty sharp set of lyrics about LTRs.
London Bridge: a signature piece by The Clumsy Lovers. there isn't a studio version of the way the song wanders in and out of a cover of Stir It Up in performance. you'd have to be there.
You are the thought that stretches
From sleep to wake
You leave me falling down
Like London Bridge in an earthquake

Date: 2006-08-03 08:14 pm (UTC)K9: people who were adults at the time roll their eyes, but as a sprog i adored that boxy robot.
kvetch \KVECH\, adjective: 1. To complain habitually. noun: 1. A complaint. 2. A habitual complainer. it used to be me. i've mostly gotten over it. what it means is that i don't want to hear it too often from anyone else.
Krimpets: a snack cake made in Philadelphia. Butterscotch Krimpets are in my DNA or something. i find them immensely satisfying, even though the sponge cake is often rubbery and the frosting has an odd greasiness.
key lime: key limes are not the same as those big fat green ones. they are much more delicious and much tougher to use to make that pie.
kippers: i first heard of kippers when i saw Arthur. they are a delicious and very smelly high protein treat.
karma: it's a bitch. it's also a good place to grab a cup of coffee if you're out by the Locks.
Kenya: twofold. the place entered my imagination when i saw The Flame Trees of Thika on PBS. later i was annoyed by the Kenya flash animation fad because i had dialup internet access at the time.
Kurosawa, Akira: Throne of Blood might be the best Shakespeare adaptation ever.
kyogen: the comedy companion to noh. i actually think kyogen is not entertaining. the mannered delivery style is painful, especially if it has been translated into english. a friend who worked with Don Kenny to develop a traveling kids show described performing for US elementary school kids as (IIRC) "like dragging a rotting carcass through the room, and about as funny."

It's far and away Mifune's best death ever. I still think he could have pulled it off, if he'd had another 20 minutes or so left in the film.
Stinking pointy stick guys.
