quiet time
Oct. 11th, 2003 04:33 pmwe skipped soccer today and went to the market instead.
it was bittersweet, since we officially started Atkins last night. it's a perfect day for a really elaborate espresso confection and pastries, neither of which i could have. or humbow. or juice from the juice lady. or fruit samples.
today is one of the days that i moved to seattle for - chilly, bright but grey sky, occasional showers, cool but not bitterly cold. i do actually shop at the market, it's cheaper and higher quality than the grocery store, and more an event than a chore. today we got unsalted butter, bacon, bulk sausage, spinach, green beans, and vitamins. what's great right now is that the summer crowds are gone, but there's still tons of fresh produce. i put money in the piano guy's bucket and stared at fiestaware and smelled all the bakeries and looked at the fresh oj with lust in my heart. (at least i'll be past the strict bit when satsumas and pomegranates really come on) i exchanged pleasantries with our vegetable people; i love having someone who'll let me know when my favorite stuff is in the bargain corner, and what's about to come into or go out of season. C had a big conversation at Crystal meats about nitrates. (i missed seeing the donut guys.) the ticket/ticket man was lovely and he fixed me right up for Measure for Measure.
C is at work this afternoon and then writing tonight while i'm out. i'm roasting a chicken as i write, an experiment with the help of the new probe thermometer. well, the thermometer is an experiment, not the chicken, although i'm trying sherry wth it today. (maybe it isn't good with everything, but i'll have to prove that by trial and error) i saved plenty of herbs for stock with the bones, now that it's cool enough to put the pot out on the lanai to defat. cool weather makes me all domestic. i may even fold clothes. and side two of my tape is coming along. i even figured out that we can have really tremendous cocoa with stevia and heavy cream instead of sugar and milk.
i find that i'm not missing the carb-rich foods as much as their happy associations. plus my body is telling me that in this weather i should be packing in as many calories as possible before the grains rot and the herds migrate :)
we also went to the library so i have new books, finally. i took a bath this morning and grabbed Moreta off the shelf for while i soaked. i forgot about the foreward where McCaffrey thanks the fans for all their adoration and apologizes for not writing just what they wanted. but then she proceeded to do just that, and has mostly written crap for more than ten years. i don't know if she's genuinely tapped out, or if that's all she's allowed to publish.
the chicken is done.
