amazon is all out of faith in democracy, dammit

i'm starting to think that i shop more when i feel uncertain. i had a burst of lockdown shopping in the spring of 2020 (i think a lot of us did) and i realized that it has started again.

in the last week:

  • new fitted sheets (needed them but did i really need to try out three kinds from two different vendors?)

  • popsicle molds (these were unavailable during the last burst of shopping, probably due to shipping issues with China)

  • a two-year subscription to Interweave Knits

  • a POUND of a tea flavor i liked in a free sample

I bought a ton of clothes, shoes, and accessories in 2020. I call it "revenge shopping". But I've settled down. Incoming:
  • circumflatulation supplies
  • moisturizer
  • PG Tips

I was talking about this with a friend the other day, about how both our relationships with retail therapy have changed. I’ve found myself buying more stuff, at the same time not feeling as good about my shiny new toy. Meanwhile, I picked up a bunch of new subscription services over the last few months, and yep. Those are hitting the spot for some reason.

Tiny printed address labels were a common lever to accompany fundraising mail back in the day, but I haven't seen any in a while. I also remember getting coinage as a fundraising tool, which always puzzled me.

(I just printed out my return address on some adhesive labels.)

I received at least three sheets of them in the past year or so. I think I liked the Arbor Day ones best, but the Sierra Club ones are also nice.

I bought a 2021 planner and have been binge-watching plan-with-me videos on youtube. Which is very clearly a cry of distress despite how it may look from the outside.

When I'm quarantining after travel is when this really gets me. (I'd do it in the before travel quarantine too, but then I don't have faith that anything will arrive before I leave.) This week I bought an air purifier, a $200 EMT textbook, a wooden training sword, and a bunch of house stuff like replacement lightbulbs and phone chargers.
