ah, no. i don't like to dictate these things. i'm most curious about buhrger, the_monkey_king, and mr_dorbin. we have geekitude in common, but otherwise they're three whip-smart people with many interests different from mine and from each other.

while your wish is not my command (heck, my wish isn't my command, (burroughs: How long does it take a man to learn that he does not - cannot - want what he "wants"?, schopenhauer: A man can do what he wants, but cannot want what he wants.) i'll get to this in a little bit. i've seen this on a few other LJs which i can't find, and am trying to remember the full text of the first question. do you have it handy?

there's more to the first question? interesting. i don't think i've seen it. is it explaining the meaning of "being" a book in Farenheit 451? perhaps there's a rolling assumption here that it's been read. i don't know if that comes from genre fans or students...

and thanks, i didn't want to make anyone else do it. i resent trying to force a meme in the same way that i resent those lists of "do you like me? would you (insert activity) with/for me?" because it reinforces the template of the teenage girl user.

In Fahrenheit 451, the firemen burned all the books they came across, so as to facilitate the rule of Generic Fascist Government I Forget Its Name. So the resistance memorized the great works of literature, and people 'were' the book. Someone 'was' the Bible, f'rinstance.

Have you read the follow up to The Sparrow? Not as shocking and amazing as The Sparrow, but still very good. (oh and I hope you can make it tonight)

i have, and i just wasn't crazy about Children of God. part of it has to do with my feelings on forcing carnivores to be vegetarians, part that it destroys part of what was so poignant about the first book by bringing back lost characters. sometimes i think sequels are just a bad idea - look at the quality of the books that have followed Dune.

it turns out that our opera tickets are tonight (i had forgotten) but if it's not too late and C isn't knackered, we'll pop over after. many congratulations, regardless.
