[livejournal.com profile] butterflydrming asked way too long ago...

You’re stuck inside Fahrenheit 451, which book do you want to be?
Lolita. it contains subversive ideas that should be examined rather than burnt away. and if i'm going to memorize and recite something, i want it to roll off the tongue. Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul. Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta. Nabokov wrote it in English and later translated it into Russian. what wonders might he work in his native language?

-Have you ever had a crush on a fictional character?
yes. probably Lucy from The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe was my first. Anne Shirley. Jo March. Professor Bhaer. Masterharper Robinton. Rochester

-What are you currently reading?
The Closing of the Western Mind

-The last book you bought is:
the above and Boy Meets Boy ([livejournal.com profile] mr_dorbin made me buy it. it just restores your hope for humanity and fills you with warm fuzzy joy) plus The Nameless Day

-The last book you read:
The Nameless Day

Five desert island books:
The Sparrow Mary Doria Russell
Never Cry Wolf Farley Mowat
Dune Frank Herbert
A Song of Ice and Fire George RR Martin
the Riverside Shakespeare (i think it's cheating, but[livejournal.com profile] butterflydrming did it.)

Who are you going to pass this stick to (3 persons) and why?
ah, no. i don't like to dictate these things. i'm most curious about [livejournal.com profile] buhrger, [livejournal.com profile] the_monkey_king, and [livejournal.com profile] mr_dorbin. we have geekitude in common, but otherwise they're three whip-smart people with many interests different from mine and from each other.

while your wish is not my command (heck, my wish isn't my command, (burroughs: How long does it take a man to learn that he does not - cannot - want what he "wants"?, schopenhauer: A man can do what he wants, but cannot want what he wants.) i'll get to this in a little bit. i've seen this on a few other LJs which i can't find, and am trying to remember the full text of the first question. do you have it handy?

Have you read the follow up to The Sparrow? Not as shocking and amazing as The Sparrow, but still very good. (oh and I hope you can make it tonight)

In Fahrenheit 451, the firemen burned all the books they came across, so as to facilitate the rule of Generic Fascist Government I Forget Its Name. So the resistance memorized the great works of literature, and people 'were' the book. Someone 'was' the Bible, f'rinstance.

(Thank you, teenage obsession with dystopias)

there's more to the first question? interesting. i don't think i've seen it. is it explaining the meaning of "being" a book in Farenheit 451
someone who did the meme had a little explaination of the background, yup. don't remember where i saw it. i haven't actually read it (yet).

i didn't want to make anyone else do it
