yesterday we made sushi at [livejournal.com profile] mimerki's house. she did all the heavy lifting (rice, miso soup, marinated tofu, baked baby eggplants) so all we had to do was roll, eat, and drool. i'm a little less afraid of trying it at home. we skipped the raw fish since transporting it 1.5 hours was a little more engineering than i was up for after a morning yoga class. instead we brought sake, and i spread the wonders of Momokawa Pearl and the guilty pleasure of rising sun. (edited to add: we had another bottle of regular filtered sake for the rising sun)(a rising sun is one part sake to one part plum wine, hot. i've only had it at one sushi place back east so i don't know if it's their invention or if it's so heinous a concept that it could only be served in Wilkes-Barre.) we never cracked the bottle of Silver. i left all the sake as insurance for another trip, especially since i don't think [livejournal.com profile] prezarian got any before he had to dash.

i'm busy, and mostly happy. things are very intense at work, which means that i a) don't have time to write lj posts from there and b) don't feel like staring at the computer when i get home.

highlights:

  • [livejournal.com profile] scarlettina managed to get me off the ledge Friday with Wonderfalls, kitties, and chocolate/twix/butterfinger ice cream from Mix.

  • ZOMG Quiltfest. i didn't shop much this year, just goggled at other people's work. highlights included the Q Quilt, fruits of the sea, and the man from UNCLE. photoset here.

  • i ended up buying a flickr pro account because i couldn't stand to see the old pics disappearing as i topped 200 images. Quiltfest also led to my discovery of AutoStitch. i love your photo management tools, Canada!

  • astonishingly good dinner before DeVotchKa at Teapot Vegetarian House. (all vegan. must take [livejournal.com profile] hgross.) like Cafe Flora, it's a destination where the vegetarian menu is a happy coincidence. they put Bamboo Garden to shame. it was wonderful to have dinner with L where i didn't feel like she got all the crappy food, and we riffed on how to make a savory adult PB&J with their thick, chunky peanut sauce.

  • the concert was great, but the openers were horrid. i mostly liked feeling the floor flexing under the sold-out crowd at Neumo's, but i don't want to be there the night it breaks :)

  • [livejournal.com profile] mimerki taught me that jam is not scary and i have jars that i at least stirred to prove it.

  • on Monday late i got C from the airport! i made a wrong turn taking 99 down, but it it means that i finally bought a Thomas Guide.

  • Tuesday i worked from home so that i could sleep in and have breakfast at Vera's with my husband. this helped with the suckage of my current project. a bit.

  • we went to see the corpse blossom at the conservatory. photos here.

  • [livejournal.com profile] butterflydrming got me to Ohana for the first time in about two years. i'm so sorry i stayed away. the food is quite good. when you pay $7.50 for a drink there, it doesn't come in a martini glass - it's roughly the size of my head. the company was grand. long live Sushi Night!

  • C brought me all the OOTS books from GenCon :)
