Oct. 5th, 2008 09:47 ami got myself more medicine (by the light of the fridge) wrote this, and fell asleep on the couch. i woke to C bringing me coffee and a scone. the worst thing about europe was the lack of takeout coffee. he's off Sunday morning writing, and i am here not sneezing on people.
it's 2:18 am. i can divine from this that i had my last dose of theraflu at 22:00. i thought i had escaped the worst of the cold earlier this week...
we finally started playing Hunter with the Friday game crew. it's set in a WoD version of Seattle, which is an unexpected pleasure - it's very easy to immerse oneself when a few words can call up a host of associations. the GM is rocking the horror aspect of the game. no real combat, but lots of rolling against derangement. (i think i made one roll for initiative in six hours. yeah, six. we lost track of time. i miss the lost sleep.) tons of roleplaying the story, which i didn't expect this group to embrace. turns out they're good at it.
so i'm happy with that. also, i finally got my lusted-after tiny laptop. it's an acer aspire one. it did in fact work fine right out of the box, a remarkably maclike experience.
it's a lovely little machine and the keyboard is big enough that i can touchtype easily. (my fingers are thin but long. probably not good for someone with meatier mitts.) closed it's about the size of a trade paperback.
i spent most of today fussing with it, absorbed in the pleasures of building my own car. i proceeded to ditch the custom linpus interface and switch to the regular Xfce desktop, upgrade Firefox, swap out some other software, and flash the BIOS. this wasn't necessary activity, just the sort of distraction i needed today.
i take great pleasure in learning new things and problem solving, so i read and compared tutorials and checked out software recommendations and generally spent the day flat on the futon learning by doing. there are a remarkable number of patient and tolerant linux users out there, answering questions and writing tutorials. it's nice. less pain than Darwin, although tinkering with that has certainly helped. gods, i used DOS today for the first time in...twenty years?
the best thing i learned about today was f-spot. it's the photo management software that i've always wanted. it does review, basic cropping and image adjustments, plus drag and drop tagging. select and export directly to Flickr, tags and all. it also handles Flickr privacy settings. (i haven't found naming and descriptions yet, but i'm betting someone has written an extension for it.) batch upload was smooth and failure-free, unlike my experience with Uploadr on mac and windows. i can pop the SD card from my camera into the SD drive on the laptop and go. i wasn't expecting to use this for pictures, but yay!
