flat things, not so many funny hats

i had a dazed day at Foolscap yesterday. i spent a lot of juice on staying upright and absorbing info from the GOH panels, and very little on being social. (sorry to everyone i didn't say hello to or drifted away from quickly. i really really wasn't present.) i'm glad i made the effort to go; i love the intimacy and the lack of pedantic media fandom.
Foolscap doesn't have a greenroom. it's easy to stumble over a GOH, have a casual conversation, and move on. (C's fave: discussing the interesting shape of the bathroom sinks with Charles de Lint.) Foolscap also comes with no signage directing you to registration, no warning that it's cash or check only, no change for the inevitable flood of twenties from the nearby ATM. there's a sort of general assumption that everyone there knows each other and what's going on, which can be both delightful and off-putting.
random thoughts:
we finally bought (and read) most of the Buffy Season 8 comics. so far my response to them is mixed, but if someone wanted to get me this cover art, that would be okay. (no, not really. well maybe. my inner starving intern doesn't accept paying that much for a print of comic art with the logo in it. but Willow! aargh.)
i was flagging by 4:30, so we bailed on the evening concert, which i'm sure would have been nice, but i did get to hear de Lint and MaryAnn Harris perform a little bit earlier in the day.

random thoughts:
- Charles Vess totally looks like he's
mysticalforest's big brother.
- i was completely stunned when a Canadian questioner asserted that Newford was in the US. (wikipedia says this is common, but i've never had a conversation about it. of course, i wouldn't twig the legal system as wrong, i only notice things like bags of milk...)
- i should have taken a picture of Sam the Monkey for
kijjohnson
- people costuming at Foolscap end up looking kind of lame.
- now i need to look for Totoro in crowd scenes.
