to do is to be
Dec. 1st, 2004 10:29 pmi like to make things. it's comforting, as if by doing so i'm retarding entropy and staving off the heat death of the universe. it's especially gratifying to me to see parts of a process completed.
i lost interest in knitting sometime before it became hip, and then my friend T hooked me on quilting. tonight's labor was sewing narrow strips of fabric to other strips of fabric to make wider tricolor pieces of fabric. sewing done, seams neatly pressed, now i must work myself up to cutting that work into squares and triangles that cannot deviate more than 1/16" else the pattern fail. so i'm going to rest a little tonight, and return to my task Friday. should my mission succeed, i will have made something that gives the illusion of a six strand braid of color. and that's just the border.
perhaps the pleasure in crafting objects or experiences is in making a mark on the world. every time my labor is wrapped into something, the world is reminded that i'm here. sometimes it's important to be here.
hey, Q, you're here too. Uranus hit my hot little hands yesterday, and i thank you. it was something i needed, but i didn't know it.
