tonight was the opening of Crow, a new restaurant literally across the street from my place. we've been welcomed into the space in progress, patted the dog, and C has chatted with the chef/owners about their vision for the space and the menu. it's been a delight to see a windowless building opened up, a graffitti covered doorway replaced and caged in decorative ironwork, and a parade of kitchen equipment rolling by.

the concept is to have a seasonal menu, and i had a perfect summer meal. C and i started splitting an order of oysters, and couldn't keep from consuming all of our portion of bread and olive oil. i had a tenderloin pork roast that was, as far as i could tell, seasoned only with salt, pepper, and chives. it was exquisite. i tend to prefer more complex dishes, but the meat (and a dollop of jus) was the star. on the side, a slice of roasted peach, and a combination of black beans, corn, and red pepper with i think a touch of vinegar. i was so intent on my plate that i forgot to try to eat any of C's halibut (which i love) and actually growled at him to keep him away from my food. for dessert C had the chocolate gateau, which was cocoa rich and almost creamy in texture, and i ordered the lemon mousse...but our server got me the mango sorbet instead. the sorbet was barely sweet, and i suspect had little or no added sugar. it was presented in a martini glass on a square of handmade paper, with a shortbread cookie on the side, garnished with a tiny wedge of lime. that drop of lime juice was the thing that made the dish. i never would have known that mango and lime belong together. but the mistake got us the desserts gratis. overkill, really. i'd go back for the lemon mousse.

after i got home i realized that almost everything we ate was high protein, low fat, and relatively low in sugar. raw oysters are $9 the half dozen. my only disappointment is that there was no Riesling for my pork. the decor is a work in progress, i think, but they happened to have painted it the colors of our old living room, so except for the lamps over the bar that are obviously church salvage, the place feels like home, but with really high ceilings. and the crow silhouette is a repeating metalwork motif.

one of the things we first noticed when we arrived in Seattle was the presence of the crows. it amuses me that i was reading C American Gods as we travelled, to arrive in a city with a huge scandinavian population that happens to have these big black birds watching, watching.
