Carmina Burana, birthdays, and the blind

i've been letting real life overtake me. suffice it to say that good and bad things have happened, i'm counting Monday as the last day of the eternal wait, i had a great long weekend that included killing
mysticalforest and playing soccer with a 2 year old, and i'm on ADC and an alto by acclaim. 'kay.
C and i thought we would catch Carmina Burana at Seattle Symphony today. fortunately we found out Saturday morning that we could catch it Saturday afternoon or not at all. Ticket/Ticket yielded preferred orchestra seats, and our first Benaroya Hall experience was a smashing success. i was on the edge of my seat the entire time. the conductor was obviously in love with the music, literally leaping at times to land cues. we were a little too far forward to see my favorite sections (i love to watch percussion, and all the low instruments and the harp, which are tucked in the back and sides) but i was delighted that i could see the giant mystery object that is a tuba mute. the sound is just as good as they say, but all the lovely natural woods are lost in the wash of dull taupe on the other surfaces. green, cream, buttery yellow, some bit of non-brown color would bring out the craftsmanship and simple beauty of the space. musically it just blew me away. i also go caught up in the Chorale and Boychoir having to get their direction from someone who was also worried about a full orchestra. i caught him doing cutoffs with his head while he was cuing in other sections with his hands. crazy cool. there's a notice in the program about summer singalongs of classical repertoire with pro conductors. the first one is not this Wednesday but next, and i am very excited to go. the Symphony Chorale is a volunteer organization with auditions in September. i'm interested in the schedule, since i would love to sink my teeth into the Mozart Requiem and Messiah, which are both on the schedule for next year.
anyway, there was some miscellaneous shopping and the dressing and going to celebrate
scarlettina's birthday at Elliott's Oyster House. she describes her introduction to oysters and the subsequent cocktails quite well on her own. i had a VAT of cioppino. i brought home two pint containers full, and i really had put a dent in it first. the desserts are beautifully presented, and huge. the company was particularly fine, in spite of the various disasters and frustrations that made a couple folks late. i think one of the toppers was the discovery of a new penny smashing machine just outside the restaurant.
we headed up to the Egyptian to catch Zatoichi V, and i'm sorry to say that i was too sleepy to fully enjoy it. it might have been better if the seats were supercomfy like the Guild 45th so i could have just succumbed to the inevitable. i will have to see it again.
mom calling woke me this morning. they hope to visit with us in October, either during or after my cousin's wedding in San Francisco. i saw a partially successful sneak film, and a perfectly dreadful short beforehand. so bad it wasn't amusing in its badness. worse that i could see what they wanted to do, but failed utterly to do. and the production quality was fifth rate. i was glad of lunch afterward. it wasn't quite what i needed, but close enough for today. too many mushrooms and fox news.
