i have many not-secret literary crushes: Masterharper Robinton (with a side order of F'nor), Professor Bhaer, Edward Rochester. i think i've expressed all of those here or elsejournal at some point.

Date: 2011-04-20 05:50 pm (UTC)i feel like it only works if you already know the book well. if you haven't read the book, you would have no idea how the romance happens since they don't make it clear in the film that they spent a lot of time talking to each other. and the actor that they cast as St John is very talented, but not handsome. (i think St John being conventionally attractive is rather an important point.)
OTOH, it really captures the bleakness of the landscape and does a great job with her run into the moor. and there are some moments of sexiness: my favorite touch was Jane catching a glimpse of Rochester's thigh in the wake of putting out the bedroom fire.
i'd say my favorite adaptation thus far is the 2006 miniseries with Georgie Henley as young Jane.
