how do you feel about the usage of :) vs :-) ?

I personally leave off the noses and just use :) instead of :-), although I hold nothing against people who include the nose.

Solidarity!! :D

Although to be more precise, I'm at least as likely to use the Asian emoticons as the Western ones. And I tend to emoticode switch a lot. >_>;;

If the point is shorthand, one may as well do two keystrokes instead of three, yeah?

And, in true agreement with that sentiment:

I find it looks wrong to me without the nose--not so much because noselessness freaks me out, per se, but because the nose adjusts the proportions so that it's not a face with eyes for a moustache.

I use :) since it is more efficient (and also, because I like the way it looks -- the other looks slightly stupid to me).

Conversely, I also find I have a slight bias against people who use :-), as if that is a more archaic version and they are somehow less savvy. It seems unnecessarily formal, like using a salutation in on-going email threads. (Frequently it's the same folks who do both, so maybe it's just a cumulative effect.)

Dear Pedantka,
I have no idea what you mean, dear.

Dear Chaoselemental,

My mistake :-)

[livejournal.com profile] samildanach uses :-). . . which I hope does not reflect on his internet savvy! I've never asked, but always figured it was personalizing the emoticon a bit, since his nose does happen to be a strong facial feature.

Having a petite nose myself, I maintain a preference for :).

i'm with the nose, and often also backwards (-:
but then, i also use diäreses, so my typographic tastes are odd in any case.

I think :-) is more old school - makes me think they must have been around as long as me ;> - as you can see, I use a completely different smiley...

But really? both work just fine ;>

Just dots with no nose make the eyes look too small. IMO. But I'm the odd man out completely because I use an equal sign. =)

I know at least one person who does a round nose :O) which is really just overly cutesy.

I like the nose. :) Looks like bad punctuation to me w/o the nose.

I switched to (^_^) ever since I got into anime.

I find the nose to be a more masculine smiley. To add to above comments that support this, [livejournal.com profile] coffeedaiv uses :=) to signify an orangutan. I prefer anime emoticons to *truly* express myself (ha), but use as simple as possible standard emoticons when I'm keeping it simple.

It took me years to understand "less than three" (<3).

I like the nose. Otherwise the face looks smooshed to me. However this bias does not extend to unhappy faces. Go figure. :(
