LEONARD FUCKING COHEN IS COMING TO SEATTLE.

i just finished confirming my fan club membership, bookmarking the presale code page, and doublechecking my ticketbastard account so that i can be crouched over the keyboard ready to click "Best Available" at the earliest moment possible.

which makes me wonder: is there any living artist you would pay stupid money to see, even if you shouldn't spend the money? if you've already done it, was it worth it?

When is he coming, when do tickets go on sale, and how much are they?

I may have to get a ticket for [livejournal.com profile] the_misha. What does it take to join the fan club?

Not for the first time, I have location envy.

Simply because it invites comparison, or the implication of comparison.
Still, in answer to your question, yes. Took my daughter and step daughter to see Linkin Park, on the Projekt Revolution Tour, as a graduation gift to both of them. But, also, it happened to be the anniversary of my wedding, and the soundtrack to my divorce. I was broke, it was not something I could or should have afforded.
But i did. And it was totally worth it.

And I would probably do it again (not for Linkin Park, necessarily, but there are others for whom it would be worth it to me) if the situation came up.
But then again, i am stupid with money, sometimes (mostly on days that end with Y).

I flew to Lawrence to meet the author Michael Chabon. Totally worth every dollar. I would do it again, even unemployed. That's why I never check his web page, because I don't dare find out.

Tom Waits at The Triple Door would be impossible to resist.

Amen, brother!

The problem with Tom Waits playing the Triple Door is that I'm already there. Any time you see me, be assured that it's really a clever illusion. I'm actually sitting at the venue right now waiting for Tom. And that's the problem; this bar tab is racking up something fierce.

Heh. I think you just wrote a Tom Waits song.

apr 23rd, eh....? [checks calendar...]

as to is there any living artist you would pay stupid money to see, even if you shouldn't spend the money? well, we get into "should" issues. aside from lineage-members, the main person who comes to my mind is robert fripp, but i'm not sure he'll even ever concertize again...

(Cohen will be playing in BC before, and Alberta after.)
yes, and i expect to be travelling through BC while he's playing in alberta...

although i'd not describe myself as a drooling lenfan, so i don't feel a great sense of loss in this.

obviously the dream concert money would be spent on traveling to visit Fripp at home.
and having the door slammed in my face? that's the only plausible ending to this dream that my brain can generate.

I spent $90 a ticket on Pink Floyd in 1994. Not very much by today's standards but I was in college at the time (meaning I was broke). It was more than worth it.

I did that too. Totally worth it.

My wife is flying to London to see Ultravox, who are doing a UK-only reunion tour. I'm going along for the ride, and although I'll go to the concert, I mostly just want to see a bit more of England than Heathrow.

We see Laurie Anderson every chance we get, and on her most recent show (http://steve98052.livejournal.com/418814.html) we paid the big bucks for front row seats and a private reception. Totally worth it.

I'd pay silly money if the Talking Heads did a reunion show. That would be very cool.

I've spent big bucks on non-music stuff too. The biggest score was a 2006 Cantwell fund-raiser, where I got to meet then-Senator Obama, and got an autograph (http://steve98052.livejournal.com/467039.html). Hearing him speak in person was quite a thrill, even though he hadn't yet declared himself as a candidate.

The only things that make me sad are the things I didn't do.
So now, if I have a choice, I take and spend the money whether I have it or not because the memory will always be with me. I'm confident I can get money somehow, someway.
And yes, I have. Patti Smith. Jethro Tull. Talking Heads.

I regret more than I have words that I -didn't- see the Clash. Till my dying day I should have stayed in NYC a couple more months and seen them. I should have done it.

I should have paid whatever I had to to see Billy Joel and Elton John tour together. They'll probably never do it again, and I'll never get the chance. But that would have been it. That and any Pink Floyd show.

When I bought the tickets for Depeche Mode a couple years back I was quite sure at the time that I was spending money I didn't have. I passed up the big Rose Bowl show when I was 15, so I pretty much had to see them. The night of the concert was... one of the worst points in my life, and I almost skipped the show. I'm glad I attended; it gave me perspective.

Considering that I paid of that credit card debt pretty quickly, "spending money I didn't have" is less accurate than "spending a lot of money on something I didn't know that I would need".

Going to see LC would be worth eating plain, cheap groceries for a couple of months. I bet it will be amazing.
