i spent some time updating Flickr this week. i went on a photo expedition to the zoo, and realized that i still had Norwescon shots on the camera. and a thumb drive full of stuff from Portland.

it was an amazing day at the zoo. i saw the snow leopard up close, bird sex, a clutch of ostrich eggs, the new baby gorilla nursing, a giraffe that wanted grass more than fresh lettuce, a siamang sitting patiently while art students sketched, and a tapir in the open enclosure instead of under glass. (many of these are only memories due to me being too excited to grab the camera, or the enclosure being hard to photograph because of fine chain links or smeary plexiglas. but yay! i <3 my zoo membership.)

as much as i love the D40, i find that i'm less likely to tote it due to its bulk, and the way that it attracts attention. (when the SLR comes out, then you get the security guards interested, for example. nobody thinks anything of a cameraphone or point-and-shoot. i usually don't have any trouble explaining that i'm a hobbyist, but bleah.) then there's the expensive thing around my neck that says tourist issue. hence my tendency to shoot like crazy in camera-expected places like the Chinese garden or the zoo, and less when i'm walking around or busy enjoying myself.

Gotta start going to cons!

I haven't been to a con in over 20 years, but I remember people talking about Norwescon even back then!

I think I'll take my older boy to Animethon and maybe Pure Speculation this year. Neither of my parents had much love for SF&F.

When I was in high school, several of us would drive from Cape Breton County up to Halifax (this was in Nova Scotia) to attend HalCon every March. Five hours on East Coast roads in the winter, in my dad's '77 AMC Hornet! According to FaceBook, most of those people are still alive and working in IT...

Good point about the spiffy camera. Still, I've often managed to get my Canon Digital Rebel and nice fast lens into movie theaters, past security checks, just by rolling it up in a coat. While they're poking through women's purses, they overlook my big-ass camera. And I'm equipped for the personal appearances (which are the only reason I'd bother bringing a big-ass camera into a movie theater anyway).
