i came across Students of Virginity today.

i was trying really hard to respect this girl until i got to this bit:
She once told another reporter that oral sex, while “disgusting and disrespectful,” is not sex, but she now expresses clear approval only of kissing and hugging.

i can wrap my brain around how she got to disgusting. but disrespectful?

If it's disgusting, then wanting someone to do the disgusting thing is disrespectful. Similarly, offering to do a thing both parties know is disgusting is probably disrespectful.

(Not saying she's right, just that it is internally consistent.)

It's also consistent with a view I've seen advanced before - the penis, as the symbol of male power, is the instrument of oppression - to put it in the mouth, therefore, is to in some way accept / acknowledge / worship / respect it, and thereby to make the giver of oral sex subservient to the receiver. There's a sense from the view that oral sex has nothing to do with physical pleasure, and everything to do with power-dynamic and submission.

(I'm probably mangling the view horribly; it never made a damn bit of sense to me, seemed to ignore oral sex with a female recipient, and generally seemed to be very close to the "all sex is rape because of an imbalanced power dynamic in society" view, which I find morally reprehensible and demeaning to the victims of actual rape.)

But, yeah. Disrespectful, I guess. I have no idea - I just feel sorry for people who spend so much effort denying the realities of having a body.

You know, that thought's come to me before, too. I suppose there's some sex-is-a-tool-of-the-patriarchy way to downplay it - but that said, I'm never going to use my fragile bits as an instrument of oppression anywhere near things that are optimized for tearing the meats.
