via a locked post, a video that captures the feel of everyday Seattle and life on the bus: Blue Scholars - Joe Metro. i'm attracted to the familiar world of their current album, Bayani. i don't really like the music, but i think i'm starting to understand that the music is not why people listen to hip-hop.

I had to re-read your last sentence once or twice, but I think I get it. No, maybe hip-hop isn't great music, but it's often great poetry. (My opinion on Eminem was turned by an article in one of the NY papers honestly drawing parallels with Dylan.) And I think Blue Scholars speak about my city like NWA spoke to Compton.

yes, i think i would like a book of Blue Scholars lyrics. they're telling stories that i understand, using images that are powerfully evocative.
(i first accessed Dylan through covers. it took years to discover that so many great songs came from one source, and then learning to love him, horrid voice and all, was a whole other process.)
