good news/bad news

tonight i learned that i've been doing everything right, but old lady Danube's model is physically incapable of booting from an external drive or firewire target disk mode. i wish i had found the article that ended with the all-important "note:" a couple days ago. no disaster, just no upgrade. bummer.

Which Mac (http://www.lowendmac.com/profiles.htm) is it? Can't you just replace the internal hard drive?

it's a blue & white g3 (which replaced the iMac that you helped to limp on previously), and the reason i have it is that the hard drive contains Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. each time i consider replacing parts, i then consider that the whole thing is worth maybe $50. i thought it might be nice to have Tiger on it; it just means that the shareware/freeware/open source folks are starting to cease Panther support, so no more software upgrades of many kinds. so far, it still surfs the internet and retouches photos just fine.

it's time to replace it, but i'm holding out for my imaginary ideal computer, a multitouch slate with the docking system that they patented a while ago. i have already made C promise that if they announce such a thing this month that he will not let me buy it until they've done at least one revision. (C's first-evar white iBook was not a perfect experience, and i don't want to get screwed like the iPhone early adopters...)

This (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/01/03/apple-creating-imac-like-docking-station/) popped up yesterday. I always thought the PowerBook Duo/DuoDock was the coolest thing since sliced bread. I was the first out the gate with the MacBook Pro (2.0 GHz Core Duo) almost 2 years ago. She still has enough power to fend off my desire for a shiny new iMac. I might add a terabyte external drive instead. And I didn't wait for Apple in Canada - I imported an iPhone and hacked it to work with my carrier.
