yesterday brought news of SciFi developing a Diamond Age miniseries.

now HBO is doing A Song of Ice and Fire. a season a book, which is about right. except that the press release gets the series name wrong. fear.

Well, at least HBO has a fighting chance of getting it right. I have no confidence whatsoever in SciFi, unfortunately.

(I'm surprised it's The Young Lady's Illustrated Primer and not Snow Crash that's getting the tv/movie treatment first.)

Snow Crash costs more - the car chases, the VR landscapes, etc.
since the focus of Diamond Age is for everything to look like it's *not* high tech, it all comes from a rental warehouse. even the cityscapes wouldn't be much of a push on a backlot. much smaller effects budget.

Hmm. Outside of the Metaverse and the Raft, the Snow Crash world looks pretty much like a worn down version of ours, because it is, just in a decade or so. TDA is 60 or 70 years in advance of that, and has a lot more real-world changes -- Feeds, airships, floating robots, islands rising out of the sea, nano clouds, body armor, mechanical stilts, the underwater habitats of the Drummers, and so on.

In either case, though, it's mostly going to be CGI effects. I just think Snow Crash is more accessible for consumption of the masses.

prolly is. heck, when i first started doing Stephenson, based on back-cover plot summaries, i was sure i'd like Snow Crash more. which is not to say that i didn't - it's a great book. but i enjoyed Diamond Age even more.
