i am so glad someone else, even a fictional someone else, feels the way i do about DeBeers.
i also love wikipedia vandalism, especially when it's true. no, i didn't do it, someone beat me to it.

Date: 2006-12-14 09:25 pm (UTC)I'm sorry it hasn't been updated to reflect the Canadian "conflict-free" diamonds now on the global market.
Not that diamonds are the only gemstone racket, just the biggest one. When I was asking at one store that shall-not-be-named about whether there were different saturation intensities of blue sapphires available and what the pros and cons might be (because I prefer a ligher, more vibrant and intense blue than the common inky blue you generally see), I was insistently informed "No, you want the dark blue sapphires," with no reason given.
I didn't like being contradicted and told what I really want, especially with no spoken reason but the unspoken "because that's what I have to sell you!"
Why are the dark blue ones the right ones? Because when questionable quality sapphires are given various heat and chemical treatments to remove flaws and try to turn them into gem grade stones, it tends to darken them. There are a lot more of those and they're a lot cheaper for jewelry manufacturers to work with. . . .

Date: 2006-12-14 09:26 pm (UTC)I re-applied the change, sort of. I changed the wording to fit in more with Wikipedia's NPOV and put a note on my change that the sentence I added is basically a summary in simpler language of the paragraph preceding it. :-)
As an aside... Would you be willing to go read this post (http://omnifarious.livejournal.com/256053.html) and friend my OpenID account. :-)
