Nov. 19th, 2006 04:31 pmi spent some time downtown Friday watching the last round of man vs machine Scrabble and made a significant discovery - i may never have to visit Bel Square again! Lush is going into the space formerly occupied by Mont Blanc in Westlake Center. there's no date on the website, and when i peeked between the signs it looked like no work had been done yet, but they had an ad up on craigslist for help which has already been taken down. i have to believe they are going to try to be in place for holiday shopping. pleasepleasepleaseletmegetwhatiwant. Friday also got me a magical Nordstrom Rack $20 dress - little, black, and suitable for my shape at various weights.
C and i had scotch and happy hour at People's Pub and then caught Casino Royale with pirates K & J. i loved it and (a rarity for me) i'm ready to see it again. it's the best of the recent crop of franchise resets. especially with Bond, we are primed for certain tropes, and we look for them to be handed to us with a wink. in a reset, we're expecting a wink-wink-nudge-nudge. this film holds them back for so long and with so much misdirection, that when they come the release is a true delight...and almost all of them are throwaways. i think i would have enjoyed it nearly as much even if Bond wasn't a beloved and familiar character. the feel of the characters and storytelling is much like the novels, which i would probably be pulling off the shelf again if i wasn't all caught up in Aubrey and Maturin.
after countless glowing recommendations, i finally got Master and Commander out of the library. done, delighted, on to Post-Captain today. it's rather like a Jane Austen novel, but with sea-battles, dissection, and sex. (that's what's missing from Austen - rolling broadsides.) fortunately i've never been very interested in the historical period, so i not only am largely spoiler-free on the books, but i don't even know what's going on politically. good times, although i did grab one of the companion books (they appear to be an industry onto themselves) at the library today. there's a Moby Dick level of terminology to keep up with. the library even has a digital collection, which means i can have instant audiobook gratification (if the book holds are running slow) and toss it on the sansa.
scarlettina took me to the Best of the NW craft fair yesterday. it was nearly overwhelming; it is possible to put a tremendous number of artists' booths in an airplane hangar. we were both most enchanted by mixed media artists, but neither of us had a few thousand to spare. my favorite was unavailable as a print :/ i consoled myself with a new tea mug. perhaps tumbler is a better word; it has no handle and is misshapen in such a way that it fits very satisfyingly in my hand and has a spiral in the bottom that catches tea leaves prettily. (example of the spiral motif in her bowls) green outside, a sort of cantaloupe orange inside. i also got a blue-black one for C. prices are good. i think i may see about commissioning a soup tureen from her after the holidays. (she had one bowl and matching ladle in stock that was purple. lovely, but not for me. and i want a lid.) in the evening we had a fine dinner and visit with
scarlettina after which i filled my precious with tea and admired it a bit too much.
