we watched SciFi last night while sorting papers (keep-shred-recycle) and folding clothes. mostly this was for a re-viewing of Tooth and Claw, and a hate-lust relationship with BSG.

but the real prize of the evening turned out to be Heroes. we only have cable because of the internet, and we rarely turn on the television, so i've heard almost nothing about this one beyond seeing headlines on SciFi Wire. it's smart and compelling, and the premise is waaaay cool. i might even tape the normal showing on Monday. we'll see if i'm just charmed by the Japanese guy or if it has real staying power.

Tooth and Claw was more fun the second time. probably because i was a little distracted and not sitting on the edge of my seat needing it. there's a great deal of pleasure in setting up the opening credits with a scream. the marital arts friars are definitely cooler when you know they're about to kick ass. the "we are not amused" running gag is still gag-worthy, but i was able to relax into the giddiness of the Doctor and Rose and accept it as setup for the harshness to come. the Torchwood speech still feels like a giant tie-in promo billboard.

BSG was okay. i enjoyed the payoff of the webisodes, but like the Doctor Who Children in Need special, people who didn't see them first lost something. still hate what they've done to Lee. i'm also tired of Ellen Tigh as plot device. ("okay, so in this episode we need a flawed human to do exactly the wrong thing and drive action. good thing we have Ellen! can't use Baltar for everything!")
i complained elsewhere about my shouting at the television moment, where Kara shows signs of stockholm syndrome. i agree with C that she's been brainwashed, but i don't believe that she should be magically moved by random toddler. i say this as a woman who tends to like children only as individuals rather than abstracts, who didn't like her niece and nephew until they developed personalities - and i was absolutely sure of that familial relationship and found it favorable. i'm a bit warmer and fuzzier than our Starbuck; i'm hoping this goes somewhere other than the trend in the second half of last season of making her a stereotypical woman whenever it pleases the writers rather than writing a consistent and interesting character.
gunshots offscreen = script immunity. yawn.
i'm piqued by this idea of New Caprica as Iraq/Northern Ireland and i'm curious to see where it goes. i give them two more episodes to not fuck it up.

I've been pulling Heroes via torrent and it looks good so far. The Japanese guy is _way_ cool.
