a discussion of livejournal's revised TOS for userpics on Making Light. hell hath no fury like a mention of breastfeeding. (and gods forbid anyone's feelings get hurt by citing studies...some days i wish i could tell people to get a helmet.)
i'm not sure what to do here. the "rolling blackout" protest doesn't actually remove money from SixApart's coffers, and what do they care if free users drop? i thought the old TOS phrasing was solid, but i also respect a straight no-nipples rule if that's where they draw the line. then again, offensive language doesn't appear to be restricted. could i get away with a neo-nazi default icon? do i want to stop other people (no matter what i think of them)from having one?

Date: 2006-06-01 05:54 pm (UTC)It's not a breastfeeding issue, it's a naked woman jiggly part issue. A blackout date only means LJ pays less for that day due to lack of badwith usage.
I wish some icons were restricted. When I look at my LJ at work, a cartoon of a man and woman having sex in an icon will get me in trouble. An icon of naked breasts, though probably NOT breastfeeding, will get me in trouble. Yes, this means I should not look at LJ at work probably, but I should be able to based on the TOS.

Date: 2006-06-01 10:04 pm (UTC)That's a list that I wouldn't sign. I think that SixApart is within their rights to change the TOS. However, if they do, they should offer paid users a refund if they close their accounts because of the new terms.
Personally, I'd rather see non-breastfeeding breasts than breastfeeding ones. I don't really like watching anyone eat.

Thank God I live in Canada - too many breast-feeding fanatics for the government to fight in court.
