i can't read lately. i got some real standby kinda stuff from the library, and it's not working. new Ray Bradbury didn't hold my interest past page 44. now i'm trying Shadow Puppets which is part of a trilogy that's esentially Ender Wiggin's life from Bean's POV (more cheeseburger reading). Card's made the token Battle School chick obsessed with making babies. there's a geneticist talking about how reproduction is the sole meaning of life even if you're gay, don't like sex, or don't like children.
up until this point, i've always enjoyed Orson Scott Card. great world builder, always a little sentimental and family-focused, but in a way that was honest and coming from the characters. i always appreciated that when he writes about himself it's very clear that his faith is the core of his personal life, but it's not the core of his imaginative life or his writing. this one really crosses the line for me and i can't decide if i put it down in disgust or keep going like it's some horrific accident and i can't avert my eyes. and why can i swallow chauvinism, free love, libertarianism, representation by military service, etc in my sci-fi, but not statements that are pro traditional family and anti-birth control? doesn't he have a right to be political too?
i'm so glad i didn't actually buy it. at least i'm not adding to his tithing.
