i fell in love with Octavia Butler's work eight years ago, maybe more. since i moved to Seattle, she's made at least two public appearances that i missed due to other commitments. each time, i declared that i should not be upset, because she lived nearby and i would always have another chance to say thank you.

not really.

i was looking for a sample of her writing online and found this one at scifiction - not the sort of work that i love best, but rather appropriate: The Book of Martha.

I never had any obvious chances to meet her, unless there was a booksigning nearby that I didn't know about, since I don't keep track of authors that I like. It would have been nice to meet her, to hear her read her own work. The woman is gone, this should be saddening, yet I can only think about what she left.

Okay yes, I am a little sad around the edges.

Don Knotts is dead, too. I'm picturing the two of them bumping into each other in the afterlife, and it's...strange.
