i'm following the CBC broadcast, which is running ahead of NBC and has less commercials. the parade of nations is over and we're into some random pantomime. yawn.

a few observations:

  • [livejournal.com profile] boldfeather was right about the HBC Team Canada uniforms. i'm so sorry.

  • the best way to get into winter sports if you're from a country with no snowfall is to be the child of a diplomat.

  • why am i surprised that they make earmuffs that have a band behind the neck like newer headphones?

  • Swedish flag mittens! everyone should have something cool on the palms of their mittens.

  • i think i only heard one song played during the parade that wasn't in English.

  • i love seeing all the former SSRs out there.

  • whoa, one Korea.

  • could we please stop the Cirque de Soleil-ization of events?

A) YES. For many years we had public spectacles that did not require stiltwalkers, silent clowns, and people swinging from the ceiling and flailing around with fire. All of this shit is very cool, but I'm getting sick of it being associated with any given event with sufficient budget. But circus artists are kind of whores, which I get since it's an expensive thing to do and you end up very poor.

B) Cirque de Soleil were definitely innovators, and they brought circus arts back into the hive mind, but circus arts go way way back. I'm just getting sick of them getting credit for ideas that have been around since say- Commedia Del Arte.
