aboot SciFi Friday
Jan. 21st, 2006 06:02 pmi was ill yesterday and found myself alone and immobile, so i entertained myself with all of SciFi Friday instead of just taping BSG.
i watched John Doe for the first time. while i understand the economic and various other reasons to record television shows in Canada rather than the US, can we just cut the bullshit and set them there instead of "Seattle"? there's nothing wrong with Vancouver. i always liked the way Forever Knight was in Toronto. it was cool. then again, who else was watching Forever Knight?
i particularly hate the way they can't even spring for stock footage of Seattle. or fact check the attempts to put local flavor in the dialogue. (telling a lost driver to park under the viaduct when he wants to shop at Westlake Center? that's not "knowing everything." it's being cruel.) or fact check the weather. (rain falling in a torrential downpour. snow on the ground.)
Stargate SG-1 is certainly popular enough to get a dialogue coach for the actors who are supposed to be members of the US military at a top secret installation. (if there is some region below the 49th parallel that pronounces sorry "sore-E" please let me know.)
Edit: rural upper Midwest. but not appropriate to character, and IMDB confirms the actors are Canadian.

Date: 2006-01-22 06:27 am (UTC)however, an American professional actor would never say it that way no matter where they grew up unless it was specific to their character.

SG1 last friday was mostly for the die hard fans of the show...bringin
back dead characters is always a treat.

Date: 2006-01-22 06:24 am (UTC)I suspect that there are regions of the northern Midwest, particularly the band running through Michigan-Wisconsin-Minnesota-North Dakota, that might pronounce "sorry" as "sore-E". That would probably be a rural dialect, which may not be consistent with the characters.
