caught in a moment

this morning i finished Bel Canto. a novel about a hostage situation -that is not a thriller- can be very good indeed. fortunately, C was gone by the time i screamed (near the end). when a book gets me to the place where i'm responding aloud it's frustrating to have someone show up and try to comfort me, blocking me from finding out What Happens Next. wow. that's kinda sick.

My book group read that and I tried very hard to get into it, being a responsible book group member, but I never got as far as the scream moment. The prose did not sweep me up to the unique place I ask novels to take me to. Other folks in the group enjoyed the book very much, and their fear at the outcome was real. grab a pillow and scream!
