five, the final frontier
Sep. 21st, 2005 05:12 pmfive questions from
buhrger. ask and you shall receive five from me, whereupon you post your answers with the instructions and perpetuate ad infinitem.
1. what's coolest thing about the new house? what's the non-cool-est thing?
coolest = location. not just the neighborhood, but the south-facing windows, the garden all around, and the way it's set high off the street.
non-cool-est=electrical system. this place still has glass fuses. some of the outlets aren't grounded (at least they're polarized) and the thermostats are supposed to get replaced before heating season begins in earnest. (this could turn into "landlord" but not yet. he's mostly just odd.)
2. you've seen Serenity (twice?) already - are you planning on being there opening night? if so, what are you looking forward to - what sorts of changes do you expect from the early print you've seen? if not, why not?
just once. yes. the color hadn't been normalized when i saw it. the music wasn't done. mostly cosmetic changes, although i'd sell my body to Joss to change one story outcome. it's not the Buffyverse; there's no magic that's going to reverse it.
3. do you think affordable commercial travel into space will come to pass in your lifetime? if so, you going?
no way will i ever make enough money. am i going? hells yeah. no waiting for the private sector - i'm forking the money over to the Russians as soon as i win MegaMillions.
4. you've described yourself as "fiscally conservative", and yet you seem excited about the work that NASA does. how do you reconcile restrained government spending with space exploration?
maybe it's messed up, but i don't consider NASA to be big government. i think we need NASA, PBS, and the NEA as much as we need the FDA. those things are hope. my childhood without those programs would have been truly impoverished. i think we need hope way more than we need to worry about what consenting adults do in their own homes.
5. what's the best place in the seattle area to go star-gazing?
there's a lot of light pollution in-city, but i like to lie in the bowl of the international fountain in Seattle Center. i'm sure there are better places.
within a reasonable drive, i like on top of the bluff in Port Angeles.

Date: 2005-09-22 12:31 am (UTC)invariably what i say when people on tv say "my god..."
this place still has glass fuses.
wow
i'd sell my body to Joss to change one story outcome
does C have any say in that?
i don't consider NASA to be big government
nope, but it does cost a lot. there are fiscal conservatives who wouldn't see provision of hope as an essential government service. (i'm not saying i agree with them)

By the end on my residency there, I had installed secondary curtians in that front area. The light is absolutely amazing during Winter and Spring. But come Summer, it's so bright you need shades inside the house. It does save on the light bills, I'll give you that.
Definitely get those thermostats fixed. I got a $400 heating bill during the '03 snowstorm, when PSE decided to jack their rates for the month. those glass fuses are charming, but having to regulate your enviroment by constantly unscrewing them really blows.
