i think fanfic is a perfectly healthy hobby. it's a hobby, and it's illegal for it to be anything else. sigh.

The problem is that there is so much drama between the parties that you can't even get at the issues there.

yeah. nihilistic_kid is quite the muckraker, but i often find the primary sources to be of interest - and they are generally made available.

it's one of the things i've grokked this year about teh interweb - you must be perpared for everything you put out there to bite you in the ass. everything.

Yep. It's a general life lesson that some learn the hard way. Hell, I learned the hard way, most people do, I suppose.

A lot of my friends write FF and so I don't often get into discussions about it but I find a cry for cash to write it when I do it by sacrificing sleep so I can write at night to be annoying at the very least.

what really bothers me it that there are lots of nice people writing FF who understand that they will never make a living off of someone else's IP, nor should they, and i think this gives them more of a bad name than reams of poor writing ever could.

Sometimes I wonder if people understand how intellectual property law works at all. I personally think Most IP law is Bull, but copyright law that protects the actual authors of work is absolutely the most defensible and admirable.

And fanfic is very much both parasitic and creative. And it's that relationship that really feeds the community and makes fanfic what it is (and what makes both the best and the worst fanfic). It's also what means it can't ever be for profit.
