would be nice - heck, i'm sure that one of the main reasons that they seem to be falling to bits is that they're bloody old. (admittedly, not as bloody old as we are. why aren't we falling to bits?)

We self-repair. I think we should build the next generation from whales. They heal much better than metal and plastic.

OK, so here's my question.

What kind of "foam" can damage a tile that can withstand the heat and pressure of reentry?

When I think foam I think light and fluffy. Such as "How much foam would you like on your latte?" or foam rubber.

foam like that rock hard spray insulation. it's even that funny color.
we visited the Air & Space museum annex in late 2003; they have the Enterprise there. first of all, unbelievably huge. the leading edge of the one wing was off for testing, and you could see all the layers.
it looks both astonishingly cool and astonishingly Rube Goldberg, especially when it's next to a Blackbird.
