i finished Cryptonomicon this weekend. i'm sorry i waited so long to pick it up; it's been a while since i had a book in hand that i stayed up late on a work night to read. certainly, he's not the greatest writer of character evar, but the profusion of yummy yummy filling ideas just papered over it.

Stephenson readers - since i'm not up for The Baroque Cycle just yet, which one should i read next?

In general I would say Snow Crash but for you I recommend The Diamond Age, due to Victorianesque goodness. (Fair warning: I was completely unable to get into The Baroque Cycle, which probably makes me a bad geek, but it's very different than his earlier books IMO.)

Zodiac is my favorite of his books. Snow Crash and Diamond Age are both good too, though the endings tend to leave most readers frustrated. Skip The Big U.

I recently read the Baroque Cycle. It's a mixed bag -- there's a couple of different intertwining plots running through it, and one is far more entertaining than the others.

read it a while ago, loved it. for you, i recommend Bellwether, also by Connie Willis, and The Plague Tales by Ann Benson.

i'm with the mobb on this - go Diamond Age - Snow Crash is pretty much archetypal cyberpunk, but i found D.A. (even) more satisfying, and think you might too.
and i also can loan it to you, if you're willing to wait a little over a month :-)
