i was terrified that we wouldn't pull it off, but yay i have been to Disneyland & Disney California Adventure! and today's covid test was clear
a few goals:
got some golden hour shots of Black Spire Outpost. it's a full-on LARP if you want to, complete with Aurabesh signage, cast members who stay in character, and an area control phone game where you "slice" door panels around town with your "datapad".
[the Millennium Falcon in a spaceport setting with rock spires in the background]
[a shuttle sitting on top of a building. the shuttle doors are marked with 77 (Star Wars release) and 83 (Return of the Jedi release).]
the food and drink in Galaxy's Edge were all engineered to be tasty but not recognizable flavors (to an American anyway). frex, the appetizers in Oga's Cantina were notably spicy but i couldn't put my finger on the source. the Cantina was cool but not something i would do again. too crowded and focused on turning tables to actually enjoy the atmosphere.
[the Cantina bar, with some alien creature in an aquarium, and taps on cylinders with bubbling contents]
the custom lightsaber experience was spendy, but had a nice feeling of ceremony. the resulting object is hefty and feels good in the hand, makes authentic noises, and animates at on/off so that it appears to extend. i got a green crystal (you can get additional crystals to swap out and change the blade color if you like).
[my lightsaber hilt, a silvered base with brass and copper accents. it has some engraving and patterning that is vaguely Art Deco. meant to evoke High Republic, i think]
the big draw at Disney California Adventure was Avengers Campus. the park also includes Cars Land. the transition between Cars Land and Avengers Campus was clever but raised some questions - are we saying that autonomous sentient cars exist in the Marvel Universe?
["flowers" made of vintage car tail-lights around billboards for Stark Motors]
the conceit is that we're on industrial property in SoCal that belongs to the Stark family. lots of fun references to in-universe WWII and postwar stuff.
[brick wall with Strategic Scientific Reserve logo stencil]
the Spider-man ride is in a converted Stark Motors factory, and has some graffiti on the outside.
[adorable Spider-bot street art, signed "Miles"]
And then there would be props kicking around like this:
[crate with hoses and wires. the crate is labelled DODC Department of Damage Control West]
more later in a locked post, i think.
a few goals:
- make lightsabers ✓
- see the Nightmare Before Christmas overlay on The Haunted Mansion ✓
- see Mary Poppins ✓

Date: 2023-01-16 05:14 pm (UTC)How was it? I saw a bit about on a Disney+ special on holiday decorating and it was cool to see how much the rides can get altered during those seasons.
That is a pretty light saber! Also nice to see some of the art design for Avenger's campus.

Date: 2023-01-16 06:41 pm (UTC)one of the bits that slayed me was that there's a room with a fortune teller and tarot cards, and she's kind of a floating head. well, for the holiday they wrapped the head in an ornament that reminded me of a pointy mid-century tree topper that my parents owned, and all the tarot cards were redone on-theme with the Nightmare Before Christmas characters. they missed a trick not selling that deck, or merch with some of the card images. (actually we saw someone with a t-shirt with one of the cards on it later. i assume as with most Disney merch that it was a limited release.)

Definitely, that would be a fun thing to have.
