the Babylon 5 rewatch continues. i'm glad we started after January 6, it would have been too much for me earlier. getting into season 3 with the rise of Nightwatch, the declaration of martial law, attacks on Mars, and B5 declaring independence...the creeping fascism erupting into civil war certainly feels like something that nearly happened here. it's making these episodes much more emotional and difficult to watch.

while it's definitely not how i'm responding to it, i can also see how QAnon-types would see themselves in the narrative of fighting the Shadows, and feel like they've lost to Clark and been cancelled by the Nightwatch.

we are always the hero in our own stories.

It's eerie how B5 seems even more relevant today than it was 25 years ago. Like, for example, I used to think that "Illusion of Truth" was over the top and not very believable, but now it seems like a scarily accurate depiction of fake news, QAnon propaganda and the like. Same with the terrorist in "Convictions", which now seems like a textbook pro-Trump terrorist.

I remember thinking that B5 hit really hard in the Bush years (when I first watched it). It would have to hit a lot harder now.
