this evening I heard the sweet sound of a group of people singing happy birthday in the courtyard, and I rushed to the balcony door.

There were a good 10 people, without masks, gathered close together around a table, singing.

I was absolutely furious from the moment I heard their voices.* Funny how I used to love the sound of people having fun in the courtyard on summer evenings.

*there's at least one high-risk person whose patio is only separated from the public area by a low wall. fuck those thoughtless singing jackasses.

I completely agree with your assessment of the situation. But I have to admit when I first read your opening sentence, I had a momentary flush of good, happy feelings: people singing! What a wonderful...uh, what??? So your good writing did exactly what I presume it was intended to do.

exactly - i was imagining all of them covered completely and the cloud expanding over the courtyard and into all the courtyard-facing doors and windows on that floor. ugh.

My sympathy. I view everyone without a mask as a potential assassin — and I hate that reaction, but there it is.
