yeah, episode 3 of Picard was full of endorphins. i don't think it's a spoiler to say that this is the episode where they got the part of the trailer where he says the thing. it felt earned.

i kind of had a go see Birds of Prey plan but instead there were good meals and knitting with Picard and Doctor Who and...Detective Pikachu. which is honestly pretty good. like, i don't think anyone mentioned to me before that it starts out with the characters joking about Cubone's backstory while the guy with the dead mom tries to catch one. (there's so much awful stuff hidden in those Pokémon backstories. it's for kids!) also, when i was playing Pokémon Go regularly, Magikarp was my buddy Pokémon and one makes a memorable appearance. it's visually enchanting and of course Pokémon are so damn cute.

I was so-so on Detective Pikachu as a whole, but I think that by far the best part was the sense of place. They did an amazing job of creating a world where you could watch and be like, "Yeah, this is what it would be like if Pokemon were real."

The response I saw a couple of times on twitter was "this is the well-thought-out urban fantasy film i've been waiting for... and it's pokemon?!"

I just put Detective Pikachu on my viewing list yesterday exactly because I'd heard a lot of positive response to it after it was released. Glad to get another data point!

Detective Pikachu satisfied my need for cute animation, as I knew it would from the trailers. Then it turned out to be a solidly good narrative, with a reveal built from the question, "Why does Pikachu in the Detective Pikachu game have such a deep voice?" and I love that. Also the coffee thing.
