i don't like video learning because it takes so much longer than reading.* for technical material i will take a written tutorial with photos or screenshots over a video every time.

taking a flipped class is forcing me to deal with more video than i like. somehow it's fine to be in a lecture for 60 - 90 minutes, but watching a video lecture that long feels like eternity. fortunately, youtube understands my needs.

tonight i started out the lecture at normal speed. then 1.25, then 1.5, then 1.75. being able to crank up the speed as i got impatient helped me feel more in control. (maybe that's why i hate video learning, not just the general feeling of slowness, but when i read i can speed through things i get and slow down when i need to concentrate.) i also had additional videos to watch that were taught by a nice young man from the US south. i just started him at 2x.

i wish i could get by on just the reading, but there's always info in the instructor's lecture that isn't written anywhere.

*for me. i understand that other people don't have this experience.

I am SO WITH YOU. JUST GIVE ME THE INFORMATION IN TEXT. But yeah, I know other people prefer other modalities.

I also prefer text, but I'm terrified to speed up videos for fear that everyone will suddenly sound like incomprehensible chipmunks. So I just suffer. I haaaate it that "how to do X in Linux" is like 30% video answers and 70% text answers now, though. I don't want to watch a five minute video, I want to see four lines of command line or five of "go here, click there, enter your $foo in the $bar"!

I have the same problem. I call it "being held hostage by linear content." It's more than just speed/slowness... It's hard to skim content to skip to the important stuff; I can skim/search way faster across printed words.

i remember seeing something recently about different speeds of playback, and that concentrating on speech becomes difficult somewhere between 2× and 3×. that'll of course depend on the speaker's natural pace....

Yeah, I generally prefer reading as well, although it depends on what I'm learning. For example, things like seeing how a device works is often better seen as a video. Also, I have more than once had to go from a written gaming guide to a video because things were missing.

But I agree with you that being able to speed up and slow down are big factors in how irritating having only a video option can be.

This is one selfish reason I love the push for greater accessibility on online content--if there's a transcript, I'll just read that and occasionally check the video if I need to see something visually demonstrated.

This isn't selfish.

If the info gets in to your head better via text, then it's great!

It's okay that people learn in different ways, and increased accessibility means more people can learn.
