in the original origin story, Carol worked for an Air Force+NASA project with Dr. Lawson (secretly the Kree Mar-Vell), and an explosion of Mar-Vell's project infused Carol with energy powers and Kree DNA.
the comics character was "Walter Lawson" instead of "Wendy Lawson"; the event happened in the lab instead of outside; the project was a mcguffin called the "Psyche-Magnetron" instead of being tied to the Tesseract.
I felt that the film kept very close to the general outline while misdirecting the grognards and tying everything neatly into the MCU. plus i quite liked Annette Bening's performance and there was no reason that Mar-Vell needed to be a guy.
(there's another more-recent storyline where they've retconned in that Carol's mom is Kree or something, but i haven't read it and it is just part of the flailing that has happened to the Captain Marvel books post-Kelly Sue DeConnick.)
