when you cook an ancient recipe you need to 3D print a copy of your cuneiform tablet so it doesn't get messed up in the kitchen
computer-animating textured hair for a video game i love this kind of insight into process.
AskHistorians on Moana and coconuts the "Polynesian Pause" is a thing.
RIP mystery soda machine this is a bit of old Seattle spirit that i am very sad to see go. at least people are still costuming statues.
was there ever a call to keep the Statue of Liberty shiny (instead of green)?
how to say "can i pet your dog?" in many languages
/r/churchofrogers it's funny how much more Fred Rogers means to me as an adult than he did when i was a child. i grew out of the show pretty quickly, but if his philosophy actually founded a religion i would be pretty cool with it.
Complicating the Narrative a different approach for journalists covering divisive issues.
the story of how reddit recreated the Snappening/Snapture just in time for Infinity War rentals.

Tlingit armor and swords the armor is made of Chinese coins! and i had no idea there was a sword culture in Alaska. super-cool.
a story about how the BBC radiophonic workshop turned into a band I have fond memories of their big effects set from college - IIRC the theatre department had the records and the radio station had the CDs. they were too expensive for ordinary mortals to buy, but so very fun to explore.
staranise on the idea of being 'mirror-hungry' as the result of a deprived childhood.
about the (deadly) use of arsenic green in clothing i do love that color. there's nothing quite like it.
a story about the Korean dog cloning business what i find creepy about this is how animal rights activists are on about the cruelty of IVF treatment. i understand that there's a difference between being forced and engaging in a choice, but it still feels like we care about dog pain more than human woman pain.

Date: 2018-08-09 03:10 pm (UTC)That "Complicating the Narrative" article is fantastic. I read Daniel Kahneman's book Thinking, Fast and Slow a few years ago, and in some ways it was the most depressing book I've ever read. But in other ways it was a reminder than it's not people being stubborn and unreasonable, it's an factor of human psychology, and if we know that, we can work with it.

Date: 2018-08-09 08:21 pm (UTC)that's certainly where he comes from - he was ordained as a Presbyterian minister, and they recognized the show as his ministry. but he was actually quite careful to avoid any trappings of Christianity in the show because he wanted all children to be included. so yeah, I guess the teachings of Jesus without the sin/afterlife/revelations parts? but even real Christians would keep the redemption from sin part for sure.
when you strip that out I suppose Christianity is mostly "be excellent to each other" and I do find that hard to argue with even if there's lots of other stuff I don't like.
Thanks
