today on All Things Considered, which i listen to at work online on eastern time (so it starts three hours earlier) they did a feature on maple syrup growers in Vermont. it was an April Fools' joke. they actually describe a sweatshop in Samoa where people are chopping up and boiling down a slurry of old maple furniture to extract syrup. and the idea that maple trees in Vermont will blow up if they're not tapped. being at work and not entirely intent on the article, they completely took me. i didn't really get it until they thanked their sponsor for the article, the Bark Council.
