i was cranky last night, so i watched some tv to cheer me up. it kind of worked.

the new (final) season of Rebels started this week. looks like they're going to be releasing two episodes a week for the next month or so.

the opener seems to be putting a button on Sabine's Mandalore side-quest for now. i get that they need to pull the party back together, but it did seem odd that they spent all this time developing her as a leader and wielder of the darksaber only to hand it over to Bo Katan as fast as possible. i have no problem with Bo Katan running things, but her dropping out of the sky has to be confusing to anyone who hasn't watched Clone Wars.*

i'm bummed that they pulled the punch on Sabine's family, but i'm hoping we just watched the Kobiayshi Maru sequence that relaxes us for a big hit later.

for anyone who has watched Clone Wars, it was both wonderful and horrible to know what Satine means to Mandalorians under the Empire. her legacy as a pacifist has been erased and she's become a different kind of martyr - first naming a super-weapon after her, then raising the darksaber in her name. i get that Sabine only knows what she's been told. but Bo Katan? what i can't tell is if this was tone-deaf, or an inditement of how the rise of the Empire completely destroyed home rule and the idea of the New Mandalorians, or Bo Katan retroactively claiming victory for the Death Watch.

i really dig that her father is an artist, and a political prisoner due to his dissident artwork. that's a nice touch.

prediction: Sabine is going to be separated from the main Rebellion at the end of the season by becoming the Mand'alor in the wake of the deaths of Fenn Rau and Bo Katan.

someone on Reddit brought up the fact that Kanan was on a holo call with Hera, like he can see anything. but of course Hera would like to see him. it looks like they're finally leaning into Hera/Kanan. which has been there ever since the character shorts they did before the first episode. i always figured that it was there but not anything that Ezra would pay much attention to - kind of like you know your parents are into each other. it's also way too complicated to delve into for the kid audience re: Jedi code. note that the "no attachments" thing never comes up when Kanan is doing training with Ezra.

prediction: Kanan death confirmed.

* and i continue to wonder what happened to Korkie Kryze, because if Rey has to be related to any known character, Korkie is my favorite candidate. i ship Obitine harder than Anakin did.
