things that are making me happy this week, five things make a post edition

not everything has gone to plan this week: some stuff i talked about in a couple locked posts, and then there's the way Powerball didn't draw my numbers*.

1. i got C to go kayaking with me on Saturday. that was nice, even when he was being a butt.
   
   
   
   he's agreed to go out with me again tomorrow.



2. i did some stuff that was hard for me, and fell on my face, but i'm better for it.



3. i finally went to see The Big Sick with Knitta D. it was a good day to talk with her, and i was glad to see it with someone who wouldn't be triggered by all the medical stuff in it. i think that helped me keep from being upset myself. (that said, philotera and scarlettina and probably C are not allowed to watch it.) ultimately i liked it, although i felt it had been oversold by the time i saw it. Holly Hunter is brilliant, as pretty much always.



4. the latest episode of Restaurant to Another World has a mermaid!



5. i decided to give Kesha's Rainbow album a try. it's good, and benefits from being listened to as an album - stylistically it ranges from country to get-up-and-shake-yo-ass dance tunes. pop goodness.

and oh yeah, there was an eclipse. we had something like 92% here. that was enough to see twilight and feel a rush of cold. it was delightful to be in a group and hear the waves of reaction as new people stepped onto the deck and put on their glasses for the first time.



*say what you want about the lottery, but when there's a draw in the hundreds of millions, we buy tickets, and for me they're worth their cost just for the fun we have building castles in the sky about what we would do with the money.

Powerball didn't draw my numbers, either. I've never been to the town in Massachusetts where the winning ticket was sold.

sounds like C is on board with project kayak? = yay?

and on the math side of things, when there's a draw in the hundreds of millions, it may actually be statistically defensible to play! it'd depend on exactly how it's set up, of course. and by "statistically defensible" i mean as an investment strategy. as long as you can afford the ticket, it's always defensible to play as an entertainment.

I think he's currently on board to make me happy. he likes it fine, but it hasn't grabbed him the way it grabbed me. I suspect that once I've done my rescue class there will be more going by myself.

The way I look at it is that buying a ticket means your chance to win is basically zero, but not buying a ticket means your chance to win is definitely zero, so I also justify the cost as a empirical foundation for my wild dreams about what I'd do if I won.

Do you remember which song "Girls und Panzer dramatic incidental music" is? I'm trying to call it to mind but it's been a year since I watched GuP.

I made up the title - it's a version of the usual upbeat marching tune, but an arrangement with a slower tempo and some minor chords. C is a big fan (read tank nerd) and has collected all the instrumental music he can find and likes to work to it.

I will take your prohibition about "The Big Sick" willingly. I've heard enough about it that obeying said prohibition will be easy.

I'm delighted that the kayaking is giving you such joy, and that at least C is trying it. This is all of a goodness, even if you end up pursuing this thing by yourself.
