US News and World Report has a half page article about new research that proves that nursing mothers with post-partum depression should take prozac. What the research proves is that babies with prozac moms gain weight like regular babies and babies with unmedicated depressed moms are underweight. This study proves that Prozac helps with depression, and that moms who aren't depressed nurse more regularly and are generally inclined to pay more attantion to the baby. THERE IS NOTHING ABOUT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A BRAND NEW BRAIN GETS SEROTONIN REUPTAKE INHIBITORS PUMPED INTO IT IN UNREGULATED DOSES THROUGH ITS SOLE SUSTENANCE. Think about it. Mom eats broccoli, baby gets gas. Now, I don't want to go off on a rant here, but Americans are obsessed with the drug cure. I do think that Prozac is a miracle drug that allows the fog to lift enough to make therapeutic changes; Prozac was the kick in the ass my brother needed to decide to move halfway across the country and be with his fabulous girlfriend instead of sitting in his isolated cottage and forgetting to eat. But the key thing is that you have to clear up some of the life problems that go hand in hand with depression, or you'll just be okay with having no job and no friends.
We can take pills to get thin, get hard, get calm, get pregnant, get not-pregnant, stop hearing the voices, and stop moving our foreheads so that they don't wrinkle. The problem is that none of these things are a cure for limp dick or schizophrenia, or infertility, (or fertility) or aging. When you stop taking the pills, the problem is still there. And what's up with all the ADD /ADHD diagnoses now that Ritalin is so harmless? How many of these kids could just do with more parenting than the freaking television, and the right school? But pills don't require effort. Every article about weight loss gets down to burn more calories than you consume, do it by reasonable eating and EXERCISE. But we're all too fucking lazy to accept that. I know I am. If only they hadn't decided to restrict ephedra....
